Top YouTube Ads: 8 Trends to Follow

July 16, 2015

In 2014, YouTube analyzed consumer views and confirmed that 4 of the top 10 trending videos on YouTube that year were created by advertising teams.  Here are some of the best practices to think about when creating a YouTube ad:

  1. Be Authentic: Authenticity gives viewers a taste of the brand’s persona and its value.
  2. Make Video Ads Interactive: These days, viewers can engage with content in ways they can’t with television. For example, brands could reply to viewer comments. Making video ads interactive will give the audience a change to engage and do something, therefore making a longer lasting impression on them.
  3. Collaborate with Experts: Brands should consider collaborating with independent YouTubers to reach a wider audience.  For example, Friskies pared up with Buzzfeed on “Dear Kitten” which reached millions of viewers.  YouTubers are more aware of their fanbase because they get constant feedback, and most of them have a huge impact on their fans.
  4. Take Time to Tell a Story: Telling a story engages viewers and makes it memorable.
  5. Think Like a Filmmaker: Create videos with a cinematic feel.  Both storytelling and film quality can be combined to leave a longer-lasting impression on viewers.
  6. Play a prank: Viewers like to watch pranks if they are positive and harmless.
  7. Make a Meme: Memes that catch on and spread throughout social media a.k.a “go viral” give a lot of exposure to your brand. Utilizing already existing internet memes (like flash mobs or online jokes) or making one of your own give your ad some humor.  For example, the iconic “First Kiss” video went viral and spawned dozens of spin-offs.
  8. Take Advantage of Tent-pole Events: Take advantage of big events like the World Cup or Oscars by uploading ads based around them early to YouTube. People saw many Superbowl ads way before the Superbowl actually aired.
