Word of Mouth Marketing (WOMM)has been around for a while and is one of the most effective ways customers form opinions about brands. Some may even refer to it as the original social media platform. WOMM works because we trust what our friends and family say.

Suzanne Fanning (President of Word of Mouth Marketing Association), presented a data based presentation on why WOMM is so important today even in a society where digital seems to rules all. Her presentation focused on creating experiences that are worthy of being passed on from person to person. Fanning shared some of her thoughts on how marketers are using WOMM to it’s full capability.

  • According to Nielson, 92% of consumers believe recommendations from friends and family over all forms of traditional advertising.
  • WOMMA and AMA found that 64% of marketing executives think that word of mouth is essential yet only 6% believe that they have mastered word of mouth marketing.

In the past, marketers focused on the four P’s (Product, Price, Promotion, Place), but now there should be a new focus for marketers—the three E’s. Engage, Equip, Empower. The three E’s can lead your company to a great WOM marketing campaign and to be one of the most beloved and talked about brands. Here are more details on how to use the three E’s:

  • Engage: Listen and engage with what your consumers are telling you. Get to a point where your brand is part of the conversation. Respond on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn—whatever platforms you are on. Some of the best companies excel because of their frequent communication with their customers.
  • Equip: This E is very dependent on your product and what your consumers expect from you. What do you excel at and what makes your brand buzz? If you’re not sure what gets your customers raving about your product, customer service is a great place to start—everyone loves great customer service.
  • Empower: By giving your consumers inventive ways to talk and share their thoughts and opinions your brand can gain traction. Contests and creative campaigns on social media always work well.
